A weekend in a hill home above Kodaikanal where the phone signal goes off the moment you arrive and it is just you and nature without any distraction. Two slow days of home cooked meals, real conversations in a place far from the urban chaos, shared with a small group of strangers who won't stay strangers for long.
There's a moment on the road up to Kookal when your phone quietly gives up. The bars drop to one, then to none, and stay there. Most of us would feel a flicker of panic. We're asking you to exhale instead. Kookal is a small village folded into the Palani Hills above Kodaikanal terraced farms, shola forest, a quiet lake, and a cold that settles in by evening and sends you looking for a blanket and someone to talk to. There are no resorts here, no cafés handing out WiFi passwords. Just hills that have been doing this for a very long time, and a home that's opening its doors to us. Because that's the heart of it: we're not checking into a hotel. We're staying in someone's home. You'll wake up to mist on the windows and woodsmoke drifting from somewhere nearby. Meals are cooked, not ordered. Eaten together, slowly, the way meals used to be. And then? Not much, on purpose. Walks through the shola when the light is good. Long conversations that wander nowhere and everywhere. Tea that goes cold because no one wants to be the first to get up. You'll arrive as a small group of strangers and leave as something warmer than that. It's what happens when you take the phones out of the equation and leave people with each other and a fire. This one's for anyone who's been meaning to slow down. This is the kind of travel Gongango was built for: not ticking off sights, but stepping out of the noise long enough to remember what travelling is supposed to feel like. One night. No signal. No agenda. Just Kookal, a warm house, and the rare luxury of being completely unreachable. Come find out how quiet your own head gets when nothing's buzzing in your pocket.
* 3.85 Kms downhill descent to reach our accommodation which will take roughly 2 hours and while returning it will take 2.5 hours and we will be returning in the same path (uphill trek) * Rain Covers and Trekking shoes are mandatory, the entire route would have uneven trails and a bit of muddy terrain in few places if it rains * Recommended for those who have done treks before or those who have a routine of physical activities. For beginners, please prepare yourself with some physical activities like long distance walks/runs way before the trip.
It’s completely remote, secluded and an offbeat place, away from all the chaos and madness and not connected to grid. No electricity and minimal mobile network good enough for emergency calls outside the house (only Jio/ Vodafone - Trip Lead would be carrying a sim which would work there) Solar setup will take care of basic lighting to move around inside the house, most of the days. So trying our best to keep things functional and sustainable in every possible way. This is not a commercial place. It’s primarily a self built retirement home and a passion place where the host lives full time and is willing to share only with likeminded souls who are really keen on outdoors, mother nature and willing to experience slow living and something unique. The entire abode is spacious enough with one common bathroom. No concept of private room and no hot water facility for bathing. But we have couple of cozy bunker beds, mats and warm sleeping bags for sleeping. We understand and respect the diversity of opinion. At the end of the day, we value everyone visiting the place irrespective of their status or background. But our guests are requested to kindly keep their religious or political views off this place.
* No alcohol / weed or any illegal substances allowed at any point during the trip * We expect everyone to be on time to ensure the trip is fully satisfactory to the entire group * Minimum 40% female participants will be selected for the trip to ensure gender ratio balance
Other specific details like start point, timings, participants etc will be sent to you separately over WhatsApp. You can reach out to us using the Zoho Forms listed (Request an Invite button) to show your interest in the trip and we will provide you further details.
