Things to
Know.
Visa & ETA
Most travellers need an ETA before arrival. Keep return ticket, hotel details and sufficient funds ready.
Best Time to Visit
Dec–Apr suits the south and west. May–Sep is better for the east coast and Trincomalee.
Plan by Circuit
Colombo, Galle, Ella, Sigiriya, Kandy, Yala and Mirissa work best as a route, not random stops.
Currency & Cash
Sri Lankan Rupee. Cards work in hotels and cafés, but carry cash for tuk-tuks, markets and smaller stays.
Getting Around
Trains are scenic but slow. Private drivers save time, while PickMe and Uber work better in major towns.
Hill Country Travel
Ella, Nuwara Eliya and Kandy can get cool and rainy. Carry layers, rainwear and motion-sickness tablets.
Food & Water
Try hoppers, kottu, rice and curry, and seafood. Avoid tap water and confirm spice levels before ordering.
Beach & Ocean Safety
Currents can be strong in Mirissa, Weligama and Arugam Bay. Swim only in safe zones and follow flags.
Wildlife Etiquette
For Yala, Udawalawe and whale watching, choose ethical operators. Don't demand chasing, crowding or feeding animals.
Local Etiquette
Dress modestly at temples. Cover shoulders and knees, remove footwear, and never pose disrespectfully with Buddha statues.
